Topical anaesthetics are
intended for the
temporary relief of pain
and itching by blocking
the sensory nerve
endings in the skin.
These agents are used
for surface anaesthesia
of the skin, eye, nose
and throat, to minimise
pain before injections
and during certain minor
operations. It may be
applied on both intact
or non-intact skin. They
have the particular
advantage of being
needle free, hence
painless, easy to apply
and has a similar
efficacy to infiltrated
lidocaine . It is also
relatively non-toxic.
Topical anaesthetics
should never be used for
anaesthetising wounds.
Their excessive
application should also
be avoided, particularly
in infants and children.
Lidocaine
(lidocaine
hydrochloride)
is
the
most
widely
used
local
anaesthetic.
It
acts
more
rapidly
and

more
stable
that
most
other
local
